A #SocialMedia Christmas Story - As Told By The Social Media Strategist
‘Twas the night before Christmas, as I laid awake all night. No, it wasn’t visions of sugar plums dancing in my head, nor was it the presents resting under the tree. “How can I get the best Snap?” I imagined, “What filter will I use?” “How can I capture the priceless moment that I never want to forget and share it with my friends on (insert your favorite social app here).”
Okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic but naturally, as a Social Media Strategist, these are the ideas that come through my head. “What’s trending today on Twitter?” “What’s the latest Snapchat Geofilter?” You get it, in fact you may fall victim to this disorder as well.
We’ve all been there, right? When the whole family gets back together under one roof it can sometimes feel like this:
So if you’re like me, (or any other Millennial) you begin down a wormhole on Instagram, Instagram Stories, Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook and watch how friends, distant friends, celebrities and other complete strangers are celebrating their Christmas. Instead of enjoying being present, I’m off somewhere scrolling through my news feed aimlessly.
Not this year! This Christmas is going to be different. Maybe it has something to do with being a father for the first time, but I’m making a conscious effort to log off while with family. Because I really don’t want to miss moments with this guy.
That perfect Insta Story can be posted later. Maybe Ferris Bueller was right when he said “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” And while he may not have been talking about social media back in 1986, it applies today now more than ever. So, join the movement this holiday season and put the phone down (especially if you’re driving) to enjoy being in the presence of your family and friends...just post those memories later!
