Make Twitter Great Again

FAIR WARNING: This is NOT a political post, this is a media consumption post. We do not care what side of the aisle you sit nor who you voted for.

Donald Trump’s inauguration is today. Whether you like him as your 45th President of the United States of America or not, you may have noticed he has “itchy Twitter fingers” (he tweets often and openly). Many have strong opinions on whether a President-elect should be so candid on a social media platform. There’s no doubt that America’s never seen this polarizing of a President-elect using an unorthodox approach to his presidency, and Twitter has a lot to do with it.

As a Social Media Strategist, I can’t help but to think about the use of Trump’s Twitter account. You may or may not know that Twitter has been on a bit of a downhill slope as far as usage goes. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and even Snapchat are rapidly growing and Twitter is trying to find new and innovative ways to hang with the social media powerhouses.

But, throughout these last few months Twitter has been back in the news, thanks to @realDonaldTrump. There’s no such thing as bad publicity, right? Trump has tweeted like no other “politician” has tweeted before. But something he tweeted the other night clicked for me on why he was so adamant on voicing his thoughts so openly on Twitter. He feels that he can speak directly to his audience, whether they love him or hate him, skipping over the media. Trump has made it abundantly clear that he doesn’t trust any media.

But, taking a step back, does America trust the news media? It’s been said that news outlets such as CNN, FOX News and others have a political agenda, slanting their news on politics to align with their thoughts. And it’s becoming more evident that the Millennial generation is consuming news in many different ways. For example, many of us are currently streaming the inauguration on Facebook Live.

We’ve never seen such a raw and unfiltered voice from a President-elect before. We’ve also never had these social media platforms to voice our opinions. However, if you want to hear directly from the man himself, go follow @realDonalTrump; he could just make Twitter great again.
