Vine-- June 2012-January 17, 2017

Vine, nearly 4.5 years old, died lonely and alone this past Tuesday. The video platform was purchased by Twitter in October of 2012. For a service that once had more than 200 million active users, Vine’s demise speaks to Twitter’s inability to capitalize on the technology and network it acquired back in 2012. The green app turned black on Tuesday transforming into a simple camera for smart phone users. Many blame Vine’s death on the success of the newer, younger video apps like Snapchat and Instagram as well as Live Video platforms such as Facebook Live, Periscope and Instagram Stories. Vine is survived by “Vine Stars” who are influencers who have taken their talents to YouTube, Snapchat and other social media platforms.

A memorial for Vine can be viewed on Twitter utilizing the hashtag, #RIPVine.
