Living My Dream

October 27, 2016

As we celebrate Bucket Media’s 10-year Anniversary I have thought a lot about where we started and how far we’ve come. A little over 10 years ago I had a conversation with Scott, my husband, and told him my master plan. The plan was very clear to me: (1) quit my well-paying job (2) take out a loan (3) probably not get paid for the next 6-12 months (4) start Bucket Media (5) we would figure the rest out. I told him we were going to make this happen and in my mind failure was not an option. The unwavering support I received from him was amazing. As much as I believed this would work, he believed in me even more which was just what I needed to set things in motion.

Our new tagline, “Making it Happen” is exactly what our team at Bucket has done since day one and continues to do each and every day.  And let me tell you, that is something to be proud of.

As I look back, I think about how similar starting and growing a successful company is to raising a child. I’ve done my best to train and cultivate leaders, invest in every employee and now I’m beginning to notice they don’t always need me anymore. Although that may sound sad to some people, it makes me feel like I did it right. I am so lucky to have a team that is as invested in Bucket as I am and that works so hard for a common goal. My vision and leadership of my team is an accomplishment that I’m proud of in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I want you all to know, although this is my story I’m writing, I’m not taking all the credit here. We wouldn’t have been where we are and the ride wouldn’t have been near as much fun without my business partner, Jocelyn.

Our saying with our Bucket team, “work stuff and fun-havin” sums up our team perfectly. They work so hard every day, but equally as important, they have fun together. As cliché as it sounds, our team is like a big extended family. They love hanging out together and would do anything to help one another. The numerous Cardinal games, lake retreats, State Fair concerts, Iowa Hawkeye games, holiday parties and happy hours are just a few of my favorite memories throughout the years with our team.

I’ve been reminiscing for the past month and remember our first office and how exciting it was to design it. Our next office, which we called our “forever office,” was so much bigger and had room to grow. Little did we know that a few years later we would actually outgrow it and move into a new forever office. It’s also fun to think about our very first employee and the fact that she was interviewed at Harpo’s before our first office was even complete. Happy 10th anniversary, Emily!

I think of our first clients who hired us before we had a proven track record. I’ll be forever thankful to them. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate all of our clients who trust us to always do what is in their best interest as we move forward in our journey, but those first few have a special place in my heart.

I remember in our first year someone asked me when the first time was that I regretted opening my own company. I sat there thinking what an odd question and answered,

“I have never regretted it.”

I can say with certainty, to this day, my answer has never wavered. Sure, there were hard times, but they made us stronger and I’m a no-regrets kind of person. Here’s to the next 10 years. Cheers!!
